How Much Do Employers Cover?

So every year employers struggle with their increasing health care costs. So if they get a rate increase of 10 percent and their budget is tight this year, they’re going to have to make decisions about how much of that 10 percent rate increase they can absorb for themselves. And how much they might have to pass along to their employees.

So if we take a look at averages throughout the United States. On average, employers contribute 84 percent of the cost of a single plan for their employees, and 65 percent for the cost of family coverage. Again, geographically, this changes a little bit, so in the south here, in the state of Florida, I would say employers do contribute around 80, 85 percent of the cost of single coverage, but we don’t do as good of a job in the state of Florida on the family coverage.
